Letter of Introduction

Dear Prospective Students:

Welcome to the Department of Dance at the University of Georgia! I hope that you are enjoying exploring our website and will spend some time checking out the wonderful opportunities that our department has to offer! You will see that we have four full-time faculty members, along with many additional part-time faculty, four studios and our very own theatre, the New Dance Theatre, within the Dance Building.

DANCE at GEORGIA has much to offer! The UGA Department of Dance has a long-standing tradition of training and educating talented and creative dancers who go on to dance professionally, teach in a multitude of contexts from studios to P12 schools, work as arts administrators in non-profits, pursue physical therapy, personal training, and combine their double major interests to forge creative careers.

A distinguishing characteristic of our program is its unique offering of a multitude of styles. Dance majors at the University of Georgia complete a dance curriculum with coursework in contemporary modern, jazz, ballet, West African, Hip Hop, as well as electives such as aerial, pointe, tap, and Pilates. The curriculum also includes courses in dance composition (choreography), improvisation, dance history, dance science and somatics, Laban movement analysis, and more. Students also have the option to earn their P12 teacher certification with some additional course work, and a student teaching semester. They can also choose the Double Dawgs program and earn their AB and Masters in 5 years!

Dance majors and minors also gain equally valuable performance experiences through audition-based participation in department-sponsored performances and events. These include works choreographed by faculty, and guest artists, as well as students.

Many dance students at UGA Dance double major in another field in addition to dance. We can boast that students come to UGA to take advantage of our dance program as well as the plethora of other top-notch academic opportunities this highly rated university offers. Combining your love of dance with other fields can enhance your versatility, your wealth and breadth of knowledge and your understanding of how the world is more connected and interdisciplinary than one might think.

We currently offer three audition opportunities at UGA Dance (one in the fall, one in the spring, and an additional virtual audition in spring). However, acceptance to Dance hinges on your successful acceptance to The University of Georgia. Click on the “Admissions and Auditions” tab on the website for more information on the application process and audition dates. And if you are curious but not sure you want to audition, please feel free to call us for a tour! There is no better way to get to know a university and a department than to tour the facilities and observe classes! You may also schedule a campus tour through the UGA Visitor's Center. Please contact our Recruitment Coordinator, Ms. Barbara Powers (Barbara.Powers@uga.edu). We would be happy to show you around, observe or take a class, and chat about all the wonderful things UGA Dance has to offer!

Lastly, as the new Head of UGA Dance, I am initiating a transformation campaign: UGA Dance 2.0! Come talk to us about how we are taking Dance at UGA to the next level!

We invite you to come DANCE at UGA, where you can choreograph your unique future.
